I didn’t know the secret cabal had a secret logo, Glen!

I remembered to send the poem on forgetting to Kat Harting, part of my own not-so-secret cabal of Harting sisters. She replied with this from Billy Collins, an Irish poet she turned me on to a few years ago.

Forgetfulness

The name of the author is the first to go
followed obediently by the title, the plot,
the heartbreaking conclusion, the entire novel
which suddenly becomes one you have never read, never even heard of,

as if, one by one, the memories you used to harbor
decided to retire to the southern hemisphere of the brain,
to a little fishing village where there are no phones.

Long ago you kissed the names of the nine muses goodbye
and watched the quadratic equation pack its bag,
and even now as you memorize the order of the planets,

something else is slipping away, a state flower perhaps,
the address of an uncle, the capital of Paraguay.

Whatever it is you are struggling to remember,
it is not poised on the tip of your tongue
or even lurking in some obscure corner of your spleen.

It has floated away down a dark mythological river
whose name begins with an L as far as you can recall

well on your own way to oblivion where you will join those
who have even forgotten how to swim and how to ride a bicycle.

No wonder you rise in the middle of the night
to look up the date of a famous battle in a book on war.
No wonder the moon in the window seems to have drifted
out of a love poem that you used to know by heart.

********
The quadratic equation never ever unpacked its bags in my brain in the first place. But Asunción, Paraguay I’ve still got.

Glen/Nori -- you guys watching Golden State game on ABC.  If not, turn it on.  Super first quarter.

Looks like Trump won’t turn down electoral assistance from his foreign buds, regardless of his duties to protect the Constitution. So citizens will have to take a stance. Contact your Congressionals, support this bill. Or, if you’d rather see ex-Soviet KGB agents as a part of our elections, plus anyone else who wants to troll Trump with offers of political spying, oppose the bill.

Never mind. Already blocked by Republicans. I just learned that the term “useful idiot,” which I thought Lenin had applied to unknowing tools of the Soviets, actually comes from Heinrich Zschokke, who defines it as, “Anyone who sacrifices themselves to a narcissist.” Even more apropos.

There you go again Nori, bashing the media which are are just making sh*# up. In your words:

"our media who is filling us with truths, half truths & total lies to the point where we can’t decipher what is what."

Again, if you had read the Mueller Report, including the footnotes, you would have learned what a large part of the information gathered by Mueller began as news reports and he cites each case. Apparently he didn't consider "the media" to be a font of half-truths and lies. A nice chart was put togther by James Downie at the Washington Post and I can't get it to copy here but I'm including a link to it   https://chartableimages.edapps.nile.works/chartable/5cc9da9b6950f1003162fa48/latest.svg?v=1557522764.008779

If even that's too tedious for you to read, it basically informs us of how many times each news organization was cited in the Mueller Report, here's a synopsis:

New York Times  53

Washington Post  49

C-Span  36

CNN  21

MSNBC/CNBC  21

FoxNews/Business  16

Reuters   9

Politico  7

ABC News  5

Wall Street Journal  4

Bloomberg  4

BuzzFeed  2

New York Post  2

Jay, Nori,

Who's to say for sure, but I think if Durant were present the scores would have been reversed. I just hope he recovers, and can return to the game next season.

Thanks for going to the trouble, Joan, but I’m afraid it’s least appreciated where it’s most needed.

Still aglow from the absolutely lovely tribute luncheon to the one & only Twoey Markle, held in Annapolis on Wednesday. Friends & fam gathered to share reminiscences, compare notes & reflect. Oh, the stories. Graduate of Sidwell Friends (‘64), Viet Nam vet, Alaskan king crabsman, oyster man, computer guru, loving husband, brother, friend. To those who knew him, you’ll love these photos:

Glen -- With a healthy Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson, it would have been a different series.  Golden State would have won it in six.  But injuries are part of the game.  Congrats to Toronto.  But that doesn't make life any easier for my seven-year-old grandson, Jos, who lives in Alameda, and can almost see the Oracle Arena from his apartment.  He lives and dies with the Warriers.  Never seen a kid that age so devoted to his home team.  It's fun to trade texts with him as the game is in progress.   Bright kid -- has a future in sports writing.

The moral of the tale of the child who cried “WOLF!” is not that there are no wolves. It’s that when the child cannot be trusted to tell the truth, not change their stories from one day to the next,  it's hard to know if there's a wolf or not.

“It’s probably got essentially . . .” is not a banner we’d want to go to war under, even if spoken by a Commander in Chief who was not a compulsive prevaricator. The security of the United States is threatened by this man's lies more than by wolves.

I'll do my own yabbut waddabout here. Yabbut waddabout the Tonkin Gulf? Yabbut waddabout Iraqi weapons of mass destruction? Yeah.

NH riverside lawn art. Go figger.

With scenery like that, it's no wonder the fishermen never even looked up to see the heron.

The man who was elected with welcome assistance from a hostile power says he'd welcome it again. Then he criticizes the NYT as a treasonous enemy of the people.

If I were looking for defenders of democracy and the Constitution I’d be looking at 620 8th Ave, NYC. not 1600 Pennsylvania, Ave.

Comments on foreign interference by someone who can scarcely be charged with being a traitor or enemy of the people. Well, with Trump, who knows?

"Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence ... the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake, since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government."

No matter where you are, no one can beat the weather today here in Lewes. Spectacular! A sweet gift for picnicking, beaching, celebrating families. Bring it on!

To all forum Dads: HAPPY FATHERS  DAY!! May you eat & swill like Glen, find unwavering truth like Jack & golf like Jay. Make everybody spoil you!

And may you be filled with the happy memories of which your own Dads were a part. (God, I miss mine.)

Share a Dad story. And I’ll share mine. You go first! 😁

Yes, I second Nori's Happy Father's Day to the fathers or guys without children who remember their dads. I adored my father..He was a sweet kind caring dad. He died too young of cancer at 54. I remember one time when I was working as a secretary in some summer job, he just happened to get on the same bus I was on to go home. I was so thrilled to unexpectantly see him. i remember his winks to me at holiday meals as I would sit around with other relatives so shy. I just remember his gentleness, the way he used to look, his voice; his love, and though its been 52 years since he is gone, the tears can still run down my face sometimes fresh as if it were yesterday. Love, Joanie    Happy Father's Day.

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads, Grand Dads, and Great Grand Dads (where applicable)…Jerry.

And to you Jay,

Keep that sports enthusiasm burning in Jos; he will always remember how you loved the games, play-offs, heart breaks, and ultimately the future hopes together.

And Joanie

thanks, for that touching remembrances of your dad. We do all miss our dads very much.

Thanks Nori,

If I were in Lewes today I assure you there would be a Crab Feast & Natty Bo’s. Of course I’m going to have to binge-out on a Great Chinese dinner tonight so no complaints here…

Yes, a Happy Father's Day to all. Especially to my dad, with his lawyer's habits of mind, who taught me that I was unlikely to be in possession of truth if I didn't have evidence supporting my beliefs. Life has confirmed that lesson. This is something I've tried to pass on to my own sons, with some success, I think. If your thoughts end with exclamation points more often than question marks, look for a new way of thinking. If someone--President, priest, or private cirtizen--is trying to convnce you of their truths, ask for the evidence; ask where the evidence comes from; ask if there's contradictory evidence. If they can't or won't provide you with facts, data, information you can check and confirm, they're either ignorant, deceitful, or both.

Unwavering truth? No. Unwavering skepticism? You betcha.

Looking for reality which requires no supporting evidence?

*********

Nora, eager to hear your thoughts on Trump's openness to receiving dirt on his opponents from those foreign powers eager to influence our elections? And how do you interpret his contradictory answers on passing such offers on to the FBI?

Jack, I like hearing about what your father taught you about checking out the evidence in the search for truth. Thank you for sharing those things. Love, Joanie

Jack,

I always try to remember H L Mencken's observation: “For every complex problem, there is a solution that is simple, obvious, and wrong."

I think I've used this one before, but it seems so apropos...

“For every complex problem, there is a solution that is simple, obvious, and wrong."

“Set up a meeting with the Russkis—We'll get that dirt on Biden! Find out what Putin wants in return, make sure he gets it. It's not interference, it’s making America great again.”

Every now & then I get a feeling that I am repeating myself whenever I make a forum post. I may have told this story about my Dad when I posted last Fathers Day & the one before. Oh, well. What’s one more time? Btw, Joanie, I LOVED your story. When you described that, as a shy young girl, you were buoyed by your Dad’s loving wink & smile across a busy dinner table, I so relate. Though I wasn’t described as shy at any time in my life, I often felt the protective, supportive sideline cheerleading quietly emanating from my Dad & this story illustrates what I mean. Once a year my Dad rounded us up to spend the day at Glen Echo Park (which symbolized nothing short of heaven for us kids). Specifically, the swimming pool, teeming with life, was the epitome of excitement. My big, hairy Dad would take turns piggy backing each of us from one end of the pool to the other. As a girl tween two brothers, I was always trying to keep up & my brothers were going off the high dive. The high dive was high & had a ladder covered with about a dozen kids, each one on a step. I was 7 & had to try it. Happily stepping up the ladder was the easy part, but being at the top looking down was something quite different. I literally froze with fright & behind me were anxious, angry voices screaming at me to ‘jump, dive, do something but get out of the way!!’ The next thing I knew, after clearing every kid off the ladder, my Dad’s strong arm was around me as he gently led me back down the ladder to safety & away from the taunting scene. My hero. As life brought those  “damsel in distress” moments, my Dad just knew instinctively what I needed. Unfortunately, my brothers, to this day, never let me forget the wuss I was on the ladder. But, hey, can’t win ‘em all.

Jack, all I can say about Trump’s Stephanopoulos “truth hurts” faux pas is that it’s another election season. Every little ANYTHING will be blown up beyond recognition, digested, regurgitated & then re-gurgitated again. The media has premeditated his ‘death by a thousand cuts’.  Your prayers have been answered, so enjoy the bloodbath, my friend!

06/17/19 07:17 AM #8595

Jack Mallory

No. I don’t enjoy our President's willingness to entertain hostile powers' interference in our elections, and his reluctance to inform the FBI concerning such interference. I see it like Washington did, not as a faux pas but as a betrayal of our democratic process.

To continue a theme: any evidence this story has been, “blown up beyond recognition, digested, regurgitated & then re-gurgitated again.”?

06/17/19 11:07 AM #8596

Nora Skinker (Morton)

I dare say, you make my point, kind sir. Do you actually think “op research” is a Trump phenom? Two years of investigation & still not enough evidence for Mueller to concede that anyone affiliated with Trump’s campaign (nor any American) colluded with the Russians. I know, I know - I can’t have an opinion because I haven’t read the whole Mueller report. Yet, you ask for it. (Btw, might you have a hard time believing 450 pages of material prepared by 13 Republicans, 11 of whom had donated over $60k to the RNC, if it made Biden or HRC look bad?). Read my lips: plain & simple politics.

A favor request: on behalf of a friend of mine, does anyone happen to know anything about Marianne Watts (BCC Class of ‘65)? Where she may live? Anything? If so, please private message me. Thanks, folks.

Major kudos to Jon Stewart for shaming congress into making sure the 9-11 (cancer related) victims & their fams are taken care of. Is & always was a no-brainer, were it not for politics. Gimme a break.

06/17/19 01:16 PM #8597

Joanie Bender (Grosfeld)

That is a beautiful story about your dad Nori. I am glad you loved my story too.

I disagree about it being ok for Trump to say he would take ops research on opponents. That is extremely dangerous. Love, Joanie

06/17/19 02:07 PM #8598

Nora Skinker (Morton)

Being ok? Of course it isn’t ok. It’s commonplace however to gather as much negativity as one can on an opponent. Truth is, the law should have deeper clarity since “contributions from foreign entities” has been loosely interpreted as monetary contributions, opening doors to all kinds of info. Rumors & lies (i.e, the bogus Steele dossier paid for by the DNC & originating from Russia) smells a lot like interfering with an election to me, particularly when those in authority were Comey, Clapper, Brennen & Company.

Oy.
