Studying history, observing and participating in current events, has certainly sharpened the focus of my lens, Nora; I wish that were true for all Americans. I know the price of war, I know that leaders lie to their own advantage. I know not to put implicit faith in those leaders when they push us towards war. Again, I wish my fellow citizens were as skeptical and joined me in demanding evidence before accepting the words of a chronic liar and his chorus. The hoax isn't always Chinese.

I agree with Jack and he has first hand knowledge too having been a war veteran. Look at the past, the unnecessary loss of blood and treasure in the Vietnam war. The Gulf of Tonkin fiasco and the Iraq war with it's phoney tie in to 9/11 and nonexistent weapons of mass destruction. Trump has a history ol lying and no one seems to document the imminent threat. This hasn't made us safer.love joanie

BIG plug & two thumbs up for this year's flick, "1917" which we viewed last night & which has, not surprisingly, captured an Oscar nomination for best picture. By far the best one we've seen this year. Brace yourselves for a draining experience but please spring for admission & catch it on the big surround sound screen. If this movie doesn't depict & help dissuade war, I don't know what would.
Our diverse American attitudes regarding our country is exactly what I love most about it. I'm just grateful to be sitting on the home side of the stadium.
Looking forward to the debate tonight. Without Spartacus, however, it just won't be as entertaining.
Then there's this:

Jsybirds re abortion: setting aside the notion that government should or shouldn't become involved in a decision of life or death (what could be more important, tho?), would we agree that mandating public access to statistics might be a good thing? Or do we not even care how many of these slaughters are taking place?
Footnote to last night's battering: The Heisman folks sure nailed the right recipient this year!

"catch it on the big surround sound screen."

A war movie in surround sound . . . Let's see, what might I rather do instead?

  1. Take a walk in the woods on the opening day of deer season?
  2. Submit to a CIA water boarding?
  3. Go to a professional football game?
  4. Attend a Trump campaign rally wearing my Vets Against Trump hat? Oh, I already did that. "COMMIE!"

*********

So neither the SECDEF or the State Department had seen evidence or warning of an imminent Iranian attack, prior to the assassination of Suleimani. Trump tells us it doesn't matter, we were taking out a bad guy. Like being a policeman, the world's policeman. And judge, and executioner.

Nori, Jay,

I had great expectations for the Ravens and Lamar Jackson even though they started out poorly I felt certain that this would turn out to be a Raven’s win…Wrong!  Sunday I was less confident about the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes; 28 unanswered points later I was sure the Chiefs would suffer the same fate as the Ravens…Wrong!

I may never participate in another football pool.

Jack,

Judging by your list I would have to assume Dan Synder would not be welcome at your dinner table.

Contrary to what you may surmise, Jack, some recommendations apply more to others on this forum than just to you. Should you go, however, perhaps you could give a first hand opinion of this motion picture's authenticity. Like it or not, young eyes & ears are absorbing information at a pace which makes deciphering glamour from reality more & more difficult.
Yes, I'd rather take a walk in the woods than do a lot of things I should do, too.
On another note, let's take a vote: DID Bernie say 'a woman can't win' or is Liz telling another lie?

01/14/20 10:21 AM #10406

Joanie Bender (Grosfeld)

If we are taking a vote, did Trump say 4 embassies were about to be attacked or was that a lie? I think Trump has the market on lies.love joanie

01/14/20 10:31 AM #10407

Nora Skinker (Morton)

Ha! So, I guess we need to decide who's running & never lies so that another liar isn't elected. Hmm. When you find one, let me know.

01/14/20 11:55 AM #10408

Joanie Bender (Grosfeld)

Hi Nori, I think though there are politicians who tell a lie sometimes, it is proportional and Trump really does take the cake as they say regarding lies....I think the fact checking people have it up to over 11,000 lies and counting.  I know you are an avid Trump supporter but he does lie and very often and we can't believe anything he says. Love, Joanie

Nora Skinker (Morton)

Since there is an ongoing accounting, would be interesting to tally up the number of times biased reporters, sources &/or leakers have turned words taken out of context or twisted to fit a narrative & thrown their own lies out there, Joanie. Did you actually hear DT's reference to the 4 embassies & if so, did he actually say there were definitely four embassies targeted or did he say he could name four LIKELY embassies targeted? Welcome to the world of Clinton 'legalese'! Remember Bill's finest moment when he said "it depends on what the word "is" is". You can dream that the Dems don't lie, that the GOP does but you might as well chalk 'em all up to struggling with the truth & stick to actions. They're supposed to speak louder anyway.
But, never mind. Liz answered by saying she didn't want to talk about the conversation she had with Bernie because they have more in common to talk about. From MY viewpoint, she threw out the lie & has already backtracked on it so as not to press the point & be caught in a blatant fabrication. See how that works? From your standpoint, however, he may or may not have said it but it doesn't matter. Am I right? Pure & simple politics, my friend.

By the way, am hoppin' mad about the Astros & think they should have to forfeit their World Series win to the Yanks. What say you, Glen? Steve? Jay?

Just back from a walk in the woods. Tasca says it's mid-January, time for a swim.

Nora, re: my response to your suggestion that readers see 1917. My response refers to no one other than me. That why I use the I pronoun, the first person singular. I would rather do all those thing, I make no suggestion that anyone else should react similarly.

I would note that I don't think there is such a thing as a truly "authentic" media description of war (movie, book, whatever) unless on finishing reading or viewing it you have lost a body part, a friend, a child, or your values. Those D Day scenes in Saving Private Ryan may give a very authentic experience of watching a movie about war, but not of war itself. Apologies to the great film makers, authors, and bards, but I think they would understand what I'm saying. A good article here on the difficulties in the realistic portrayal of war. http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20140710-can-a-film-be-truly-anti-war

Could you be a little clearer about your concerns with public access to abortion statistics, Nora? You occasionally post vague statistics on abortions, "millions," although of course we don't know where they come from. Is there a private, or secret, data base that should be made public? Joan posted some statistical data on declining abortion frequencies a few days ago. I followed with a link to tons of statistics. A google search for "abortion statistics" yields about 142,000,000 results in 0.52 seconds. Abortion statistics seem very publicly available.

What are we missing in terms of public access to the slaughter?  With evidence and links supporting your argument, as usual.

I am motivated by what i believe is good for the country, not pure and simple politics. My feelings about the assault on our environment by Trump, the cruelty to immigrants, the welcoming foreign intervention in our elections, etc.,is what is motivating me to seek change.

Others have a different view of necessary change, Joanie. What I think I'm hearing from Trump, Trumpublicans, and even some so-called independents is this:

All politicians are corrupt liars, and since we can never know the truth there's no point in trying to find out what's really going on, asking for evidence for claims, rationally addressing policy issues, or even trying to find a politician who can be trusted. Best bet is to support a right-wing demagogue who will maximize Executive power and minimize pesky Congressional checks and balances. Meanwhile, appoint judges that support centralizing that power, maximizing (evangelical Christian) religious values in governance, and, for some most importantly, limiting a woman's reproductive rights.

Since honesty is assumed to be passé, whatever innuendo, slander, and lies that are necessary to accomplish these ends are acceptable. Decent, honest Americans--journalists, diplomats, bureaucrats, soldiers, many of whom have spent and sometimes risked their lives serving this country--can be accused of treason, defending terrorists, spying, or simply being "human scum."

One ultimate goal is that someday Roe vs. Wade and even Planned Parenthood vs. Casey will be reversed and abortion outlawed. Another would seem to be postponing the time when Whites will no longer be the majority "race." Honest government, limited government, budget deficits and the national debt, bringing our troops home, catastrophic global climate change, nothing else matters. Well, staying in power in order to protect big business profits and the wealthy, of course.

My lens may be dark, but I think it's clear.

The Astros should be stripped of the 2017 World Series title, and the guilty people in the Astros organization        should be banned for life.*

*Pete Rose only bet on his own team to win; stupid yes, cheating no, and he's ban for life. Where's the justice?

Republicans for the Rule of Law remind us that not everyone is corrupt, not all lie, there are those who put country above party, truth before power.

"This is Ambassador John Bolton . . . He was national security adviser to President Trump. He was in all the meetings in which the president's national security team discussed withholding aid from Ukraine in exchange for announcing investigations into the Bidens. Now, Ambassador Bolton has agreed to testify before Congress."

"He's willing to do his duty to tell the truth . . . "Are Senate Republicans willing to do their duty to listen?"

And how will IMPOTUS respond to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office conclusion that he has broken the law?

  1. I have an Article 2, where I can do whatever I want as President
  2. The CBO hates America
  3. Traitors
  4. Enemies of the state
  5. Human scum

Just out. When I take some comfort in history candidly recording the Trump debacle, I think of books like this as the first draft of history. As rough as it may be on my blood pressure, I'd rather read this than watch 1917.

An excerpt quoted from the NYT review of the book: Trump to Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India--“It’s not like you’ve got China on your border.”
