Good news that Newman is reported to be in stable but serious condition. A testament to NASCAR's safety technology &, of course, the grace of God. Anybody who follows knows that since Dale, the cars have been amazing. (But then, so have the team maneuverings. Felt bad yesterday when Gibbs & Hamlin over-celebrated the win, unaware of the severity of Newman's accident). Ironically, Newman has been a loud voice in criticizing the safety of the cars for the last decade or so. At 42 & after a successful career, Newman should take this as a sign to retire & be a living, breathing dad to his two young daughters. MHO.

What's your Caps take, Glen? Nervous Nori needs to know.

As for deep-state leftists: they seem more interested in getting rid of Bernie Sanders than anything else these days.
So, what do you guys think of Bloomberg? I think it would be a real shooting match to see him & Trump go at it. I can see the billboard now: Big Apple Billionaire Bullies Fight for Turf! Yehaw!

Nori,

There are 82 games in the season, and the Caps are right there with the best. I'm counting on them to get over this slight glitch, and show us the play off stuff of last year.

It's a good day to be a friend of IMPOTUS and/or a white collar criminal. Preparing the audience for the Stone pardon or commutation?

********

Not a great day to be an eagle, though. It's not all soaring around in the sunshine.

I wonder how supporters of Trump can reallly think its ok that Trump says he will try to throw out all cases prosecuted by Mueller....I guess many loyal Trump supporters are ok with this too as they buy into the smears against Mueller and welcome the hate filled revenge of Trump....Love, Joanie

Trump continues his vendetta, his revenge tour. People prosecuted by Comey's friend. Pat Fitzgerald for example or just highly corrupt people that Trump relates to are getting pardons. Stand by for the Stone pardon
Now he commuted the sentence of Rob Blagojevich, who tried to sell Obama's Senate seat. Finally Trump is bipartisan. He likes corrupt Dems and corrupt Republicans. Love joanie

If, as unlikely as it seems, the President should run out of convicted friends and other white collar criminals to let out of jail free, he might look to the Innocence Project. They could supply him with the names of numerous wrongly convicted people, some on death row, who could benefit from his help in finding justice.

https://www.innocenceproject.org/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innocence_Project

Admittedly, most of them are not rich or powerful, and never have been. Most of them are poor people of color who have never been and are not likely to be Mar al Lago invitees.

But these are people who deserve justice just as much as convicted war criminals and corrupt governors, police commissioners, financiers, and NFL owners.

Nora Skinker (Morton)

Yes, I like what I learned about him, Glen. Strong defenseman who helped the Sharks to the playoffs four times, only 29 years old, will aid in shoring up the blue line. Good, timely acquisition.
The Pens have knocked us out of first (where we've been since Oct., btw), but it's the Flyers who most concerns me. They are on fire!
We're only 1 in 4, since Ovie reached 698. Ouch. Hopefully, that lingering distraction will disappear when Ovie gets at least two goals against the 6th place Canadiens tomorrow.
Meanwhile, sign me "nervous & spoiled".

Just found out about this, proudly added my signature to the letter.

Nora Skinker (Morton)

Gosh. Jack, is there ANYTHING Trump does that you don't condemn? Whatever, it sure keeps you one busy camper!
Watched the Dems disembowel one another tonight. Oy, what a mess. But, I guess no one on the forum will want to review it honestly. That said, if any one of you does, I'll be happy to engage. For now, I'm rendered about as speechless as a spectator at a 7th grade food fight. And wondering why I bothered to stay up late. Looking forward to SNL!

I certainly wouldn't condemn Trump for announcing the withdrawal of all American troops from Afghanistan, with a date certain. Two more died last week, one on his 10th combat tour. Many Americans seemed more focused on athletes' tragic or spectacular accidents.

Busy condemning IMPOTUS for using the office of the President to reward law breakers and attack loyal, law-abiding Americans? You bet! Keeping busy finding evidence for your own lies about the Vindmans, Nora?

Good to see Bloomberg's past and present repudiated last night. Nice variety of NYT opinions on the debate here:

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/02/20/opinion/who-won-democratic-debate.html?referringSource=articleShare

Not a serious criticism, but I did agree with Gail Collins on Bernie: I don't like being yelled at, even by a Democratic Socialist. Wouldn't keep me from voting for him, though. Hell, I'd even vote for Bloomberg. But, like Hillary, he probably wouldn't get a sticker on my kayak.

Nora Skinker (Morton)

Don't all presidents pardon lawbreakers? Commute sentences for those whom he feels have served long enough? Thousands have been made by presidents just in our lifetime. It's the unrelenting contrived condemnation of the few on Trump's list. twisted into a negative narrative to hurt Trump, that makes these feel different. The media doesn't seem to want to focus on the poor criminals, having spent years for non/violent drug convictions. & who Trump also commuted in that list, Nope! Let's pluck out & ramp up the hatred for allowing white collar criminals out on the streets who have already served more than they deserve. I'm thinking that if I had a good friend who was treated like Stone, ripped from his home in the middle of the night with CNN vultures filming him taken in cuffs, then recommending this old man get 8 to 9 years in the clink for lying, I might at least ponder using my presidential right to set him free. Even if that man were the likes of Clapper or Brennan, I'd have to ponder it.  Luckily Clapper & Brennan were not trumpers.  Therefore, they stay out of trouble. Hmm, seems fair, right?

Last night: Liz Warren - annoying; Mayor Pete - self righteous; Klobuchar - defensive with a sizeable dollop of 'doth protest too much'; Bernie - scary; Biden - mean & indignant; Bloomberg - smug & disgusted. Best comment of the night was Bloomberg's quip "you've been there 30 years, why didn't you do something about it?" I had to laugh. thinking how all these teethgrinding identity politics of victimization across the board spews forth, election year after election year. They just get endlessly regurgitated with hype & emotion on steroids. Ok, except for Climate Change. If they truly believe that with four more years of Trump we'll pay the price of losing our planet, then make the case. Don't just dance around spewing hysterical little grenades here & there. It's silly. Yet, it might really change votes if (1) somebody proves that the planet will die in the next four years if Trump is elected & (2) if somebody proves that the Donald truly does not care about our country.
Let me get this straight: if Nori mentions the death/crash/survival/accident of a popular athlete that means she doesn't care about the death of a soldier in Afghanistan. Do I have that right?

40 months jail time, 24 months probation and a $20,000.00 fine. Stone got off easy. Good to see the replacement prosecutors backed the original 7-9 years recommendation.

There are about 14,000 clemency applications that have gone unaddressed during Trump's administration. Yesterday he granted 11 of these, including a  "former football team owner who hosted a pre-inauguration party, a onetime contestant on “Celebrity Apprentice” and an infamous investor championed both by Rudolph W. Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer, and by the billionaire who hosted a $10 million fund-raiser for Mr. Trump just last weekend."

Almost half of the recipients were rich, powerful, well-connected white men, several of whom "were vocal supporters of Mr. Trump, donated to his campaign or in one case had a son who weekended in the Hamptons with the president’s eldest son."

Should we presume that these people were more deserving of clemency than the other 14,000 or so mostly poor, powerless, and unconnected convicts hoping for pardons?

“'There is now no longer any pretense of regularity,' said Margaret Love, who served as pardon attorney under President Bill Clinton and now represents clients seeking clemency. 'The president seems proud to declare that he makes his own decisions without relying on any official source of advice, but acts on the recommendation of friends, colleagues and political allies.'"

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/19/us/politics/trump-pardons.html

This is not surprising, but scarcely reassuring to those waiting for their applications to proceed without such recommendations.

******

Nora, I have no idea what your reactions to the deaths of SFC Gutierrez and Rodriguez were. I do have the impression from the media coverage that many Americans were more focused on the death of Kobe Bryant and the race car accident that you posted about.

******

And just in as of 12:33: 3+ years for Roger Stone. Anybody taking bets on a pardon for him? Rich, powerful, well-connected friend of IMPOTUS . . .

Oh, you beat me to it, Robert! Yes, he skated on this, even if discomfited by being awakened early. If I recall correctly, there were computer files the Feds wanted to make sure didn't have an accident. A Trump associate doing something illegal? Nora seems much more upset by law enforcement reaction than criminal action.

A frequent theme in photo classes and articles is to "tell a story"  when you take a picture. This is not something I usually focus on, so to speak. I'm just looking for purdy pitchers.

But this balloon must have a story to tell.

And then there's a story in new ice forming on the river:

Nori, if you think last night was mean spirited, buckle your seat belt...Trump will carve up everything and everyone who he perceives crosses him or is running against him and he will spare no one..His revenge knows not end. Even Colonol Vindman's brother was fired and Nori, what reason do you think? It was because he was Colonol Vindman's brother...revenge! .TEd Cruz's father afterall was involved in the assassination of Kennedy if you recall. You always have so much to say about the Democrats but nothing to say about your man Trump's behavior. Pardoning all your felony friends and not looking at other's who have the same sentences shows what Trump is all about. Do you really think now Nori that Trump cares about corruption when he is trying to tip the scale of justice to suit himself. And yes, the planet is at risk if Trump is in 4 more years...he is cutting all the regulations Obama put in to safeguard our air and water. He left the Paris Accords... He could care less about climate change Love, Joanie

Intelligence officials briefed Congress last week on current Russian efforts to get Trump re-elected. IMPOTUS is angered, not because a foreign power is meddling in our political process but because Congress was informed of the interference. His priority is not confronting Putin but in getting re-elected.

      Jack,

After seeing your photo of that curious red orb/balloon I could not help but recall the all-time-great classic horror movie starring Steve McQueen; “the Blob”. You recall the hapless local who pokes the glowing red orb only to end up as part of a creature that consumes patrons of the local movie theater. I think you were safe however because the blob like most of us is rendered inert by cold weather.

     Nori, Jay,

will Blackwood become part of Hockey history tomorrow night ?                 In Naples if you are near by...

Glen, red balloons are like snakes, snappers, porcupines, and eagles. A telephoto lens keeps you at a distance.

But the red balloon's story continues:

*******

This is a great idea. I'd love to teach these classes!

"Research has shown that an inability to judge content leads to two equally unfortunate outcomes: People believe everything that suits their preconceived notions, or they cynically disbelieve everything. Either way leads to a polarized and disengaged citizenry."

"The aim of the Civic Online Reasoning curriculum is to get students to ask three basic questions when reading or watching online content: Who is behind that information? What is the evidence? What do other sources say?"

"Students are taught to know the “neighborhood” they’re reading in: is it journalism, entertainment, promotion, raw information or advertising? And an acronym, IMVAIN (click on this, folks) is used widely as a cue: Are sources independent, are there multiple sources, do they verify evidence, and are they authoritative, informed and named sources?"

It's not just high school students who need education in on-line literacy and critical thinking, as we often see here on the Forum.

With a full calendar, you'll be happy to know I'll offer only a brief couple of comments on the past few posts. Joanie & Jack, how do you know Trump's intentions? Could it be that the Vindman brothers were not fired but reassigned due to the fact that they could not be trusted by the WH to support the president's agenda?
Joanie, I fully DO expect a bloodbath within & twixt the Dem factions of the party AND tween Trump & whomever becomes his ultimate contender. Chin strap buckled!
Robert, what do you think of the jury foreperson's exposure of preprejudice in the Stone case? Crazy, huh? We just can't make this stuff up!
Between the political horse races & the NHL horse races, fingernails are threatened & Orville Reddenbocker's poppin'!
Keep checking in, kids!

Joanie Bender (Grosfeld)

Nori, From all I have seen of Trump these years, his intentions are very clear...he gets rid of people who tell the truth if he doesn't like the truth getting out. Colonol Vindman was supoenaed. It wasn't like he was out to get Trump...he just told the truth. Just a few days ago, he got rid of the Director of National of Intelligence Nori, because he told the truth that Russia is interfering in our elections again and he is bringing in a Nunes friend who has no intelligence experience but will parrot the party line so to speak. Love, Joanie

As a pastry chef, Joan, I suspect you might know all about these kinds of artistic cake creations. This one blows my mind!

02/21/20 04:17 PM #10819

Joanie Bender (Grosfeld)

Its really tragic that Trump is politicizing intelligence...the Director of Intelligence he got rid of because he told Congress the truth about Russia continuing to attack our democracy, was over 17 intelligence agencies....now he replaced him with a man who has no intelligence experience and is a Trump loyalist...I guess Trump loyalists will find a way to support this but I for one am appalled and alarmed. Love, Joanie

02/21/20 04:20 PM #10820

Nora Skinker (Morton)

But the fact remains that there is no proof that his intentions are nothing other than practical reasons that (1) he believes he was not worthy of impeachment & (2) that after Vindman chose to testify AGAINST him, it was not realistic to pretend they could work alongside each other. Yes, a certain amount of revenge is probably in play but wouldn't you feel somewhat embittered if YOU were targeted by someone who held a position on your staff? Should Trump really be expected to continue to trust someone who made that choice? Even if he shouldn't, like it or not, it's his privilege, as president, to make these decisions. And I'm surprised that you're surprised at this (what seems to me) very natural outcome.

02/21/20 04:22 PM #10821

Nora Skinker (Morton)

In an election season, EVERYTHING is political. That said, I believe Trump has every reason & the right to appoint his loyalists to key positions. That's what presidents do.
