Gen. Stanley McChrystal, former commander of the 75th Ranger Regiment and the US Joint Special Operations Command, on leadership in an emergency. From an interview this morning on NPR, he characterizes effective leaders as those who:

Come to an informed and realistic appraisal of the situation

Are accurate, straightforward and candid with those they lead

Don't mislead, convey false hopes, even as an effort to create confidence

Some will leap eagerly to the conclusion that Gen. McChrystal, in his honesty, is part of some deep state conspiracy to undermine the President. We've seen that happen before, obviously, coming from those who believe that anything that contradicts their beliefs must be a lie. There's nothing that can be said to convince them otherwise, so I won't bother to try.

Ok, NOW I understand social distance!

Especially as a UC Santa Cruz grad, faculty, and ex-spouse I especially appreciate the banana slug reference. They might have added 1 Bald Eagle or 1 Osprey.

Jay, your picture looks so nice and not even elderly as our age group has been labeled. Stay well all. Love joanie

Yup. It sure would be nice to have total honesty in a leader. Whether it's "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor", "read my lips: no new taxes", "they'll put ya'll back in chains" or "it's a hoax"...we deserve better. Btw, has Obama endorsed Biden yet?

Onward & upward, sports fans. At least, if sports must be frozen in time, the Caps are frozen in first place. (Take THAT, Flyers!) I happen to be holding first place myself in an on-going scrabble tournament here in hibernation. Gotta get a little competitive spirit going each day.

Loved your architectural slideshow, Helen. Yep, thought of Escher for #4. Kept looking for the disconnect! It's crazy to think of those wonders as abandoned by their multitudes of tourists these days.

Still a great looking guy, Jay. Thanks for the friendly smile!

Joanie, are you painting up a storm?

OK, let's cut to the chase. Photos of everyone in your finest masks. Mine courtesy of a VSO auxiliary making masks and covers for vets.

And today on the river. Well, I'm only on the bank.

And above the river. I was afraid it was one of those Coronavultures coming to get me, but fortunately a Red-tailed Hawk.

Social distance probably=1.5 beaver lengths (with tail), 2.5 Red-tail wingspans.

If you wonder how he got elected . . .

And when 100,000 die, the loonie-tune right will say they were all such dedicated anti-Trumpers that they died just to make him look bad.

Found this posted on my neighborhood nextdoor.com. I'm not there yet but it may not be long 🥴

Just saw a news report about the stresses and strains of self isolation. It reported that people are going crazy from being in lock down!

It was strange, actually, because I had just been talking about this with the microwave and toaster and all of us agreed that things are getting bad. I didn't mention anything to the washing machine as she always has to put a different spin on everything, and certainly not to the fridge as he is acting cold and distant. In the end the iron calmed me down.

She said everything will be fine, which surprised me because she’s usually the first one to apply unnecessary pressure and get steamed up over nothing!!! I think she might have been sneaking off to the medicine cabinet.

I hope all of you, especially you singles like me, are coping with the quarantine. Hopefully we can all look back on this in six months and see something we learned from the experience.

Couldn't stand that masked picture so I'm giving you two BCCers for the price of one. Jennifer Harting and I from a visit a couple of months ago.

This from today's WaPo, a Dana Milbank piece using IMPOTUS's own words. Brother Mark copied and pasted it to me, since I couldn't get through the paywall. Sorry it's so long and incoherent, but when you're using his own words . . .

"President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s fireside chats reassured and inspired the nation through Depression and war. During impeachment last fall, President Trump fancied himself likewise addressing Americans 'perhaps as a fireside chat on live television.'

"There’s no better time than the present! In these dark times, Americans crave the comfort of competent leadership. I have therefore taken the liberty of drafting for Trump a fireside chat for our times — using entirely his own words."

'The coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We have it totally under control. I’m not concerned at all. It’s one person coming in from China. We pretty much shut it down. It will all work out well. We’re in great shape. Doesn’t spread widely at all in the United States because of the early actions that myself and my administration took. There’s a chance it won’t spread. It’s something that we have tremendous control over.

'Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away. One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear. Just stay calm. It will go away. The Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus. This is their new hoax.
Whatever happens, we’re totally prepared. Totally ready. We’re rated number one for being prepared. We are so prepared like we never have been prepared. Taking early intense action, we have seen dramatically fewer cases of the virus in the United States. We’re very much ahead of everything.
This is a flu. I didn’t know people died from the flu. Here, we’re talking about a much smaller range. It is very mild. Some people will have this at a very light level. Some of them go to work.
The mortality rate is much, much better. In my opinion it’s way, way down. I think it’s substantially below 1 percent. A fraction of 1 percent. I think the numbers are going to get progressively better as we go along. This is just my hunch.

'We have very little problem in this country. We only have five people. We only have 11 cases. Out of billions of people, 15 people. They’re getting better, and soon they’re all going to be better, hopefully. We’re going very substantially down, not up.
The United States, because of what I did and what the administration did with China, we have 32 deaths at this point. To this point, and because we have had a very strong border policy, we have had 40 deaths. As of this moment, we have 50 deaths. I have a feeling that a lot of the numbers that are being said in some areas are just bigger than they’re going to be.
Frankly, the testing has been going very smooth. The tests are all perfect. Anybody that wants a test can get a test. The tests are beautiful. We have a tremendous testing setup.
I don’t believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators. We are very close to a vaccine. A matter of months. You take a solid flu vaccine, you don’t think that could have an impact? Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine. Based on very strong evidence.

'I would love to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter. No way I’m going to cancel the convention. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!
We’re the ones that gave the great response. I’d rate it a 10. We’ve done a fantastic job. I think they should be appreciative. Gallup just gave us the highest rating. The highest on record.
I like this stuff. I really get it. Maybe I have a natural ability. We think it’s going to have a very good ending. We’re going to win faster than people think. I hope.
This blindsided the world! Who could have ever predicted a thing like this? This was something that nobody has ever thought could happen to this country.
I’ve always known this is a real, this is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic. I always treated the Chinese Virus very seriously.

'If you’re talking about the virus, no, that’s not under control for anyplace in the world. I was talking about what we’re doing is under control, but I’m not talking about the virus. I didn’t say Easter. It was just an aspiration. I am giving consideration to a QUARANTINE.

'So you’re talking about 2.2 million deaths. If we could hold that down…between 100,000 and 200,000, and we all together have done a very good job. START MAKING VENTILATORS, NOW!!!!!! FORD, GET GOING ON VENTILATORS, FAST!!!!!! Invoke “P”. I want our life back again.
It was nobody’s fault. No, just things that happened. I don’t take responsibility at all.'

Milbanks must had a strong drink and a long nap after he finished editing that!

What a lovely photo. Why doesn't Jennifer chime into the forum, Jack? We'd love to hear from her. Maybe she has the time during this lockdown.
Perhaps those who are driven crazy by what Trump says could try just looking more at what he does. When he spoke of his Easter HOPES, I knew better than to hold him to that. He was obviously optimistic. He knew it. I knew it. But then he ultimately follows his experts. And, again, I knew he would. Only the career politician is an expert at hiding his first thought & then voicing the most politically
advantageous response.
Helen, that was a very clever approach to conveying our dilemma through the lens of the single person. I am for anything that offers social comfort: be it Tom Hanks' Wilson basketball, one's washing machine, a pet (although I don't recommend guinea pigs) or speaking with God. I've been known to converse with my roses, as I watch them open & later even when I must snip their little heads off. But don't tell anyone.

Afterall, sharing helps get us through.

Nori thanks for asking awhile back about whether I'm painting. My landscape art teacher wants to go virtual with us painting in our backyard and him critiquing, lecturing and having group participation on zoom. I don't feel like that is for me so I hope soon to just paint on my own til we can have class again. The weather is getting nicer so it will be wonderful to paint again. Stay well forum friends. This is such a hard time. I'm sending everyone virtual hugs. Love, joanie

I wish they had paired this up with a graph of toilet paper sales! Are there really tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, of Americans sitting on the crapper behind a wall of TP, guns in hand?

Jennifer doesn't do lockdowns. Busy organizing volunteers to produce and distribute medical masks while still working a real job.

Do you have to have wireless in order to petition the Almighty? 5G? Saves the church on toilet paper, I guess, and avoids that uncomfortable question of whether to take your guns to church.

Well if Jennifer doesn't do lockdowns, I sure hope Jennifer is diligent about wearing protective gear.
Churches offer online services & prayers for those unable to attend &/or seeking prayers for themselves or loved ones, Jack. The Almighty's word is always available to those who seek it.

This just in from the WaPo:

The Navy removed the captain of an aircraft carrier crippled by the coronavirus from his job on Thursday, two days after the officer’s unusually blunt letter warned that if the service did not remove sailors from the vessel more quickly, the service would fail them.

Navy Capt. Brett Crozier, the commanding officer of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, was relieved of command at the direction of acting Navy secretary Thomas B. Modly. The Navy removed him after becoming increasingly convinced that he was involved in leaking the letter to the media to force the service to address his concerns.

The decision comes one day after Modly said that there was nothing wrong with Crozier writing the letter, but that leaking it to the media “would be something that would violate the principles of good order and discipline.”

“How it got out into the media I don't know,” Modly said. “I don’t think anyone would ever know.”

Let's hope old Bone Spurs reverses this —It is sooooooo wrong!!

Reverses it? I'm guessing Boney was behind it, Helen, or at least approved it. His MO--attacking truth tellers who have spent their lives serving the nation, as I suggested when the news about the Captain's letter first broke.

More here, but it will probably take some time for the full story to come out.

Just a word of caution folks:  Disregard the big green SIGN IN tab on our website--it's a misleading ad for a software program and not our login tab.  Keep on using the smaller regular BCC64 login tab.
