Peggy (Margaret) Shoemaker passed away August 31, 2021, at her home in Norfolk North Carolina. Peggy is survived by her son, Tray Barbee, sister, Donna Sullivan, granddaughter, Samantha Lee Moody, and nephews, Kenneth, Steve, and Mike Sullivan. We remember Peggy Shoemaker as a girl up for adventure and always on the go. In high school on some Saturdays we would tell our people we were going to the library to study and, with great glee, take off for Harper’s Ferry or even for the horse races in Charlestown, W.A. That was because, maybe, Peggy helped out at home and always had had a pile of chores to do, but from this she taught us all how to take care of thing well. Every time I iron a shirt I think of Peggy: collar/sleeves/back/front/shoulders. Peggy lived her life with verve. From seeing the country in the RV or motorcycle, to building a wood cabin by hand, to sailing boats with her husband and life partner, Al Fogelman, she just loved life and her freedom to create and explore. Unfortunately, in her later years Peggy was stricken with debilitating arthritis. Still, that didn’t stop her from traveling to Bethany Beach for one more reunion with long time BCC friends, reminiscing & laughing about our fun high school times. Too, Peggy sang in her church choir and painted. But most important to her was her love of wild nature, and every year she participated in the local seashore work to shepherd the newly hatched turtles on their frantic scramble toward the sea and freedom. A sea turtle, “Rosemary of Ocacroke,” has been adopted and cared for in her name at the Sea Turtle Hospital near Morehead City, N.C. Anyone can donate to participate in holding Peggy’s memory dear by contacting the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. Surf City, N.C. https://www.seaturtlehospital.org/ Email Adoptions@seaturtlehospital.org . Peggy was also a very funny ringleader and astute matchmaker who was great at gathering people together. Her kindness and warmth made you want to come. She was a loyal, trusted friend, who would do anything for you. When I think of Peggy, I will always picture her with her big smile. One day in the year before our 50th reunion, out of the blue I found a message left on my answering machine. It was from Peggy inviting me to the reunion! How she scouted out my phone number and location after 50 years, I will never know. But she was one to let her heart be known freely, to let you know she loved and missed you. And, dearest Peggy, how we loved you, and miss you now, and wish for one more adventure together. With love from Sarah (Sally) Starr and Julie Bland Blankinship, Janet Dew Prieger, Dale Drennen Walter, Tracy Foreman Munter, Linda Fuchs Phillips, Suzy Sarbacher Pence, Susan C. Smith, Marley Tait Joyce.
