Submitted by Hank Towle

Robert H. Varney, 67, a physician who practiced general surgery in Rockville for 33 years, died Feb. 20 at his home in the Sherwood Forest community of Annapolis.

The cause was cancer, said his wife, Joan Varney.

Robert Hewitt Varney was born in New York City. He moved to the Washington area as a child and graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1964. He graduated in 1968 from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., and from Georgetown University medical school in 1972.

He did a surgical internship and residency at Georgetown’s hospital. He was on the medical staffs of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda and was a past president of the medical staff at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville.

He closed his private practice in Rockville in 2010 and, in the last years of his career, served on the medical staff at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Joan Lippitt Varney of Sherwood Forest; three children, John Varney and Katie Rosenbeck, both of Baltimore, and Stephen Varney of Kensington; a brother; a sister; and a grandson.

I ran into Bob Varney at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital about 18 years ago. My 20-year-old son was being treated there for a serious illness and I hadn't seen Bob since high school. Bob was a doctor on staff at the hospital and saw me. He asked what I was doing there -- and when I explained he was as caring and nice as an adult as he was in high school when he was in my home room. Bob always had a great smile and he used it often.

Bob was a good friend during elementary school, and his family came along side us when my younger sister was dieing.  They had taken me with them for a weekpend at Depp Creek when Laurie passed away.  I have never forgotten their kindness.
